Interested in applying for state grants but not sure where to start? Through this two-part series, MCN and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development aim to help organizations who do not have experience in applying for and receiving state grants by providing free online trainings on these three topics.

In the first part of this three-part series entitled Grantwriting 101, you’ll learn the ins and outs of submitting a grant proposal based on an request for proposals (RFP) from a state agency, including:

  • The six stages of grant proposal development from ideation to submission,
  • The questions that will advance your project idea and proposal quickly and thoroughly,
  • How to get your questions about a specific RFP answered,
  • How to translate your project, situation and organizational descriptions and budget to meet the requirements of the RFP you are interested in, and
  • How to know you are meeting the other needs and requirements of the state funder.

Speaker Information

Lenny Jones

Laura (Lenny) Jones is the Development Manager at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. Lenny has over 25 years of experience in grantwriting, program development, and awards management through her work with nonprofits in Chicago and Minneapolis/St Paul. Before becoming MCN’s Development Manager, she served as Grants & Contracts specialist for the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center in Minneapolis’ Phillips neighborhood, procuring and managing and over $3 million annually in government, foundation, and corporate awards and contracts. Prior to her tenure at the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, Laura was involved in program development and fundraising in the areas of HIV/AIDS, midwifery, community health, and reproductive justice in Chicago.
