Incorporating methods of self-discovery, mindfulness, and an assessment to identify and unpack personal bias, privilege, and power, participants will examine their relationship with empathy and develop a work plan to integrate it into their leadership toolbox. Work will be done individually and in dyads throughout each session to provide a balance between self-reflection and the dynamic feedback that happens through processing with another person with shared goals but a distinctly different point of view and working environment.
Intentions for this workshop are:
- Expand understanding of how bias, privilege, and power intersect with race, class, geography, gender, education, and ability.
- Create a learning space that adapts to the people in the room and provides time for deep, lasting change in how participants lead.
- Process (learning, connecting with peers, planning) and product (new tools, articulated plan) are given equal attention.
- Introduce arts-based practice to non-artists.
This series is designed with mid- to upper-level managers in mind. Although the workshops will be virtual, the facilitator will introduce light, accessible movement and periodically encourage participants to move away from their desk and chair to alternate their body positioning and surroundings as is possible for them.
This training will take place over four dates, each a Wednesday: June 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Central each day.

Nicole M. Smith
, a radical healing artist and organizer, has experience and expertise in using artistic methods to address trauma, difficult experiences and injustice, to unravel dynamics of disempowerment, oppression, and systemic methods of control. Nicole has crafted her aesthetic by fusing Theatre of the Oppressed, Art of Hosting, mindfulness, supportive listening, and the amplification of muted voice(s). She does this through lecture, performance, teachings, and workshop/residency design and partnership. Nicole's work has been experienced at the International Federation of Settlement Houses in Berlin, GER, the Youth Services of America Conference in Houston, TX, the Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America Conference in New Orleans, LA, and more. She has held positions with Penumbra Theatre, YWCA - St. Paul, Children’s Theatre Company, Pillsbury House + Theatre, and Intermedia Arts. In Fall 2016, she was honored to have been invited to the White House (under Obama’s Administration) for her work in the Bisexual/Queer Community.
