The process for transforming your idea into an operating organization can be complicated. This workshop is designed to provide all the information you need to start a successful nonprofit organization in Minnesota -- beginning with an understanding of why you may or may not want to start a nonprofit organization and what other opportunities may be available to you.
By working closely with the easy-to-use Handbook for Starting a Successful Nonprofit, the session will lead participants through the step-by-step process for incorporating and applying for tax-exempt status. The Handbook is included in the workshop fee and contains all the forms necessary for starting a nonprofit in Minnesota.
Register early as the workshop has a limited number of participants to make sure that there is plenty of time for questions and answers about each potential organization’s specific needs. Please note that this session does not include legal advice and is recommended for those have not yet filed Form 1023 (the Application for Recognition of Exemption).
The workshop price includes the Handbook for Starting a Successful Nonprofit. If you already own the Handbook, registration for the workshop alone is $64. Please note that if you have the book already you must register with the downloadable registration form by mail or fax, and NOT online.

Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence
This event will address the following best practices:
- GOV 9: To allow for careful, thorough deliberation during decision-making and a diversity of perspectives, nonprofit boards should consist of at least seven individuals.
- GOV 10: Nonprofit boards must have a chair and a treasurer and should have a vice-chair and secretary. No one should serve in more than one officer position in the same organization at the same time.
- GOV 11: If staff membership on the board is deemed necessary, it should be limited to the executive director. The executive director should not serve as the chair, vice-chair, secretary or treasurer.
- GOV 20: To ensure broad public participation, vitality and diversity, the board should establish term limits of no more than nine consecutive years.
- TRANS 1: A nonprofit must comply with all legally required reporting procedures, including filing the IRS Form 990 and annual reports with the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General.
- FUND 6: Nonprofits must comply with all federal, state and local laws concerning fundraising practices. This includes registration and annual reporting with the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General and with any state in which the organization is soliciting charitable contributions.
- PLAN 1: Nonprofits should establish and regularly review mission, vision and values statements that are specific enough to effectively guide the overall goals and activities of the organization.
This training is hosted in Adobe Connect. You will need a computer with a reliable high-speed internet connection to view the training. (While Adobe Connect does have a mobile app, its functionality is limited and does not support all the engagement tools that we use during virtual trainings. Therefore, we do not recommend using a smartphone or tablet to view the training.)
You will also need a phone as you will be interacting with the trainer and other participants via voice; you can’t use a computer speakers/microphone to participate in this training.

Will the session be recorded? Because of the highly interactive nature of this training, which will include ongoing conversation via chat and polls, it will not be recorded.
Can registrations be shared? To achieve the best possible learning outcomes during this training, each participant needs to have their own connection to the virtual classroom, which means registrations can't be shared. Participants will be actively engaging with the trainer via chat and polls, and thus each needs to have their own keyboard, computer, and connection to the training.
About the Presenters
Sarah Crumrine is the communications coordinator at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, where she coordinates and executes a broad range of communications projects, including managing social media, working on print and electronic communications, working in media relations and strategic communication implementation. She has presented a number of social media and marketing workshops at various events and conferences, and was recently named a finalist for the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year. Sarah has a B.A. in journalism with a minor in social justice from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and is the past chair of the board of directors of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of the Twin Cities.
, program director, works with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits' program team to guide the organization's educational training programs, including the various conferences and professional development workshops offered in the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota. Previously, Paul was the executive director of the Minnesota Fathers & Families Network and worked on projects at nationwide nonprofits including the National League of Cities and the National Youth Employment Coalition. Paul served three years as a Peace Corps volunteer and volunteer coordinator in Paraguay. Paul holds an M.A. from American University, and a B.A. from Cardinal Stritch University. He completed MCN’s Senior Manager Leadership Institute in 2008. Paul also is an adjunct instructor at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota where he teaches for the master’s program in Arts and Cultural Management.
