Scholars and researchers continue to demonstrate that we all carry implicit bias involving social identities like race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, class, and religion, among others. This unconscious bias can work against an organization’s stated diversity goals, affecting everything from hiring and admissions decisions to how staff work with clients, patients, the larger community, and each other. This workshop addresses what we’ve learned, and how we can use this knowledge to challenge
implicit bias in all our decisions.
This workshop is designed for anyone working in a nonprofit setting. Individuals will learn to think about their own implicit biases and how it impacts nonprofit work. Nonprofit leaders will gain ideas for challenging bias in organizational policies and programs. Supervisors will walk away with tips for supporting staff to understand their implicit bias. At all levels of decision-making, we can learn to challenge the implicit bias and work toward greater equity.

- HR 18: Nonprofits should strive toward creating a workplace that welcomes and supports employees who reflect the diversity of their community.
- LEAD 12: Nonprofit leaders should create and sustain an organizational culture that best advances the nonprofit’s mission and goals.
- LEAD 17: Nonprofit leaders should encourage their organization’s staff and board to seek out, recognize and leverage the shared and different values of diverse cultures.

About the Presenter
Anne Phibbs is the founder and president of Strategic Diversity Initiatives. Anne brings over 25 years’ experience helping organizations advance their equity, diversity, and inclusion goals. She is adept at assessing an organization’s strengths and challenges and tailoring her approach to its context, culture, and goals. Anne has delivered hundreds of workshops and classes for thousands of participants in corporate, government, higher education, nonprofit, healthcare, and faith community settings. Anne built a successful diversity and inclusion leadership program at the University of Minnesota, with a focus on emotional intelligence (EI), and she is an EI Practitioner certified in the EQ-i2.0 and EQ360 methods. As director of education at the University of Minnesota, she was responsible for developing and implementing their successful Certificate Program, a series of 10 workshops designed to increase capacity for diversity and inclusion work across every part of the institution. Anne earned her Ph.D. in philosophy and feminist studies from the University of Minnesota.
