This workshop will introduce grantwriting to nonprofit professionals who have less than one year of experience with the skill. Many people who work in nonprofits find themselves in the position of “accidental grantwriter” and do not feel fully equipped for the challenge. This session will provide a balance of applicable content and resources to deepen participants’ knowledge of and skills in grantwriting.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the basics of grantseeking. This session will dig into the basic elements of foundation research and grant planning. This is a beginner-level workshop.

Learning Objectives

  1. Deepen your understanding about the Minnesota funding landscape.

  2. Learn about the types of foundations providing grants to Minnesota’s nonprofits.

  3. Develop an understanding of the sections of a grant proposal including budgeting and evaluation.

Workshop participants will receive a copy of the Handbook for Successful Grant Writing that covers topics ranging from research and planning to a glossary of commonly used terms. The Handbook is only available to participants and is not otherwise for sale.

  • FINANCE 16: Nonprofit organizations should secure appropriate levels of funding to carry out their missions and activities and, when possible, diversify their revenue sources to avoid being dependent on a single funding type.
  • FINANCE 18: Nonprofits must spend funds in compliance with conditions attached to their funding. Organizations should develop a system to ensure that donor funding restrictions are maintained.
  • FUND 8: Nonprofits must use funds consistent with donor intent and comply with specific conditions placed upon donations.
  • FUND 15: A nonprofit should plan its communications to tell the story of the organization and maintain consistent, mission-focused and timely communication with donors.

About the Presenter

Her clients include Lakes Center for Youth and Families, The Lift Garage, United Nations Association of Minnesota, Gilda's Club, Minneapolis Urban League, Jones Harrison Senior Residence, WeCan, Family Pathways, North Commons Interfaith Hospitality Network, and Children's Home Society. Dori also has experience in marketing and communications administrative support in the corporate sector for companies such as Dayton Hudson Department Store Companies, Harvest States Cooperative, Black's Photography, and Computer Sciences Corporation.
