Do you dream about team meetings where everyone is engaged and the solution that emerges has everyone buzzing with a sense of accomplishment and excitement about the future? Instead, are your team meetings painful miscommunication sessions that leave everyone dissatisfied and even more positionally dug in than before? You’re not alone!

Facilitating effective group decision making and problem solving can make or break teams and programs. From resolving interpersonal conflicts to reframing shared interests and finding creative solutions, join MCN to advance your problem solving skills. You will experience a simple and effective collaborative problem solving process as you work through a real world situation of your own. Through this process you will learn to explore perspectives, identify underlying interests, define common goals, and create options and objective criteria to generate a collaborative solution that builds consensus and inspires action!

Learning Outcomes:

  • To explore the neuroscience of interpersonal conflict and de-escalation.
  • To learn and practice interest based listening to uncover perspectives and underlying needs.
  • To experience a collaborative problem solving process and learn how to apply it to future decision making and problem solving situations.

Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence

This event will address the following best practices:

  • Principles and Practices for Nonprofit ExcellenceHR 14: Nonprofit organizations should create a culture of transparency and open communication where internal information is shared as appropriate. This also includes being open to input from personnel regarding the organization’s activities and results on a continual basis.
  • LEAD 5: Nonprofit leaders should recognize and navigate the organization’s response to the sometimes competing interests of funders, clients, constituents, the board, the public and volunteers.
  • LEAD 13: Nonprofit leaders should push the organization to make difficult and timely decisions, challenge others in the organization when necessary, and permit conflicting views to be expressed on the way to reaching resolution.

About the Presenter

Alex GlassmannAlex Glassmann is a licensed attorney who works exclusively as a mediator. He mediates at Erickson Mediation on average six days a week, helping couples build parenting plans, budgets, and any other agreements needed to shore up the terms of a pending divorce or post-divorce situation. Over the past five years, Alex has helped hundreds of clients to resolve their disputes through mediation—as well as trained organizations’ members in the art of peacemaking through the Conflict Resolution Center, a local nonprofit organization for which he serves on the board of directors. He also currently serves on the board of directors of the Academy of Professional Family Mediators and serves the Council of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. Prior to joining Erickson Mediation, Alex worked as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Judge Bruce A. Peterson, researching law and drafting court orders and memoranda. He obtained his B.A. from Pomona College and graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School.
