This two-part, advanced grantwriting series will give you the tools to develop more effective fundraising strategies and polished grant proposals to secure new and larger gifts.
Session 1: October 10, 1 – 5 p.m.
With expert guidance and peer feedback, you will learn how to implement concrete strategies to differentiate your organization and programs from similar nonprofits. Using your own grant proposal as the basis for your learning, by the end of the workshop you will:
- Understand the “Three C’s” of good writing: Clear, Concise and Compelling
- Identify the appropriate balance of statistical data, evidence-based research and anecdotal evidence to tell your organization’s story
- Apply marketing principles such as market segmentation, targeted messaging and trend analysis to your grant writing strategies
- Develop evaluation tools and a logic model framework for your program to better demonstrate results
You must submit an electronic copy of your organization’s grant proposal one week before the first workshop to use during peer-review of real, in-progress grant proposals. Proposals should be submitted to the session presenter, Lea M. Johnson.
Session 2: November 7, 1 – 5 p.m.
This session will allow you to take what you have learned in the first workshop and apply it to your own proposal. You will get feedback on your progress from peers and the expert facilitator. You will be able to take your proposal to the next level and continue refining it for maximum grantwriting success.
You must bring four paper copies of your revised grant proposal to share with peers and send an electronic version to the session presenter, Lea M. Johnson, three business days before the workshop.
By registering for this series, participants agree to keep confidential other organizations’ information shared during workshops.
As a result of these workshops, not only will you deepen your understanding of advanced grantwriting techniques, but your organization will also have a stronger template to use for future applications.
Who Should Attend: Registration for this two-part workshop is limited to professionals currently working in the nonprofit sector whose job responsibility includes grantwriting. To register, it is required that you have been writing grants for at least six months or have taken MCN’s introductory grantwriting class. Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence
This event will address the following best practices:
- FUND 11: Organizational communications, including fundraising appeals, must include clear, accurate and honest information about the organization, its activities, and when, where and for whom the funds will be used in addition to the tax treatment of a contribution.
- FUND 15: A nonprofit should plan its communications to tell the story of the organization and maintain consistent, mission-focused and timely communication with donors.
- EVAL 4: An organization’s measurement systems should be practical and useful to improve ongoing processes, activities and results.
- EVAL 14: Nonprofits should share evaluation results with a broad range of constituents to demonstrate the organization’s impact, the community’s ongoing need and the lessons learned.

About the Presenter
Lea M. Johnson has two decades of experience as a grantmaker and grantseeker. During her seven-year tenure at The Wasie Foundation, Lea served as the principal program officer for the 40 million dollar family foundation. She evaluated and made recommendations on hundreds of proposals and millions of dollars in funding to nonprofit organizations in education, health and human services. Lea acted as the first director of development for Little Hospice, developing and implementing a fundraising plan that increased contributed income from individual and institutional donors by 70 percent within two years. As a grants officer for the College of St. Catherine during its 80-million-dollar capital campaign, Lea secured some of the largest foundation and corporate grants the college had ever received. Lea has served on numerous boards, from the largest affordable housing provider in the state to community-based grassroots organizations. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from the College of St. Catherine in communications and English. In 2005, Lea launched LMJ Consulting, with the purpose of helping Twin Cities-based nonprofit organizations strengthen their grant fundraising programs.
