For many who care about advancing equity and social justice in all areas of their lives, this past year has brought tremendous challenges. While U.S. society grows increasingly diverse and complex, our social and political discourse grows more polarized, less nuanced, and frighteningly hostile. Whether it's another leader being accused of sexual harassment/assault, a new challenge to rights we thought secure, or the reemergence of organized white supremacy, we are living through a profound social and cultural moment. Continuing to build an inclusive and equitable society, in the face of so many challenges, will require not just allies and advocates, but leaders and risk-takers. And these leaders must come to the work prepared, not just intellectually but emotionally as well. In this practically-focused presentation, we will explore how the framework of "emotional intelligence" has much to offer those of us doing the work of diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

- LEAD 12: Nonprofit leaders should create and sustain an organizational culture that best advances the nonprofit’s mission and goals.
- LEAD 17: Nonprofit leaders should encourage their organization’s staff and board to seek out, recognize and leverage the shared and different values of diverse cultures.

About the Presenter
Anne Phibbs is the founder and president of Strategic Diversity Initiatives. Anne brings over 25 years’ experience helping organizations advance their equity, diversity, and inclusion goals. She is adept at assessing an organization’s strengths and challenges and tailoring her approach to its context, culture, and goals. Anne has delivered hundreds of workshops and classes for thousands of participants in corporate, government, higher education, nonprofit, healthcare, and faith community settings. Anne built a successful diversity and inclusion leadership program at the University of Minnesota, with a focus on emotional intelligence (EI), and she is an EI Practitioner certified in the EQ-i2.0 and EQ360 methods. As director of education at the University of Minnesota, she was responsible for developing and implementing their successful Certificate Program, a series of 10 workshops designed to increase capacity for diversity and inclusion work across every part of the institution. Anne earned her Ph.D. in philosophy and feminist studies from the University of Minnesota.
