Additional Resources

Listed below are additional resources that may be helpful when starting a nonprofit.

  • MCN's Handbook for Starting a Successful Nonprofit: This handbook is packed with information on how to start and manage a successful nonprofit, including a step-by-step guide through the process of incorporating and gaining tax-exempt status. The handbook also includes federal filing forms, and samples of articles of incorporation and bylaws.
  • MCN's Starting a Successful Nonprofit workshops: These workshops are designed to provide all the information you need to start a successful nonprofit organization in Minnesota -- beginning with an understanding of why you may or may not want to start a nonprofit organization and what other opportunities may be available to you. By working closely with the easy-to-use Handbook for Starting a Successful Nonprofit, the session will lead participants through the step-by-step process for incorporating and applying for tax-exempt status.
  • MAP for Nonprofits - Legal Services for Nonprofits: Providing help on contracts, applications for tax-exempt status, liability and tax issues, legal advice, mergers, dissolutions and more.
  • Attorney General's Office - Fiduciary Duties of Directors of Charitable Organizations: This Guide is provided by the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office to assist board members with the important responsibilities assumed when they volunteer their time. It is only a guide and is not meant to prescribe exactly how board members must act in all situations.
