GrantAdvisor named as one of Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative Companies 2018

St. Paul, Minn – is included among Fast Company magazine’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Not-for-Profit for 2018. Fast Company previously featured GrantAdvisor in October of 2017.

GrantAdvisor is an initiative of three organizations: Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, California Association of Nonprofits, and Great Nonprofits. Designed to encourage more successful philanthropy and facilitate open dialogue, GrantAdvisor allows grant applicants, grantees, and others to share their first-hand experiences working with funders through anonymous reviews and comments.

“A tool for fundraisers has not been available to make the foundation grantmaking process more transparent and interactive,” Kari Aanestad, Development Manager of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, said. “Nonprofit fundraisers want to improve the responsiveness of philanthropy, and they want their voices to be heard.”

Since launching in July 2017, 380 funders have received over 1,000 reviews on The site has garnered reviews from every state, and includes reviews from 5 countries. Together with its project partners and allies, the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits launched GrantAdvisor to fill the longstanding need for greater accountability, transparency, and accessibility in the philanthropic sector.

“It’s great to see Fast Company recognize philanthropy’s venture into public feedback and learning from customers – something the private sector of course thrives on,” Sonja Merrild, Director of Grants at the Blandin Foundation, said. “We hope this Fast Company recognition will help foundations see the potential this project has to benefit the whole field of philanthropy and nonprofits.”

Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies provides both a snapshot and a road map for the future of innovation across the most dynamic sectors of the economy. “This year’s MIC list is an inspiring and insightful window into how many companies have embraced innovation and are working to make meaningful change,” said Fast Company deputy editor David Lidsky, who oversaw the issue with senior editor Amy Farley. More than three dozen Fast Company editors, reporters, and contributors surveyed thousands of companies to create these lists.

The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) was founded in 1987 to meet the increasing information needs of nonprofits and to convene nonprofits to address issues facing the sector. It is the largest state association of nonprofits in the U.S.
