MCN Deputy Public Policy Director Chosen for U.S. State Department Fellowship

Saint Paul, Minn., July 6, 2012 -- Jeannie Fox, deputy public policy director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN), has been selected to be a Legislative Fellow as part of a Department of State Professional Fellows Program. Jeannie and others will build on decades of sustained programs that connect people, institutions and communities to serve and to change lives across the hemisphere.

Seventy-five fellows will participate in fellowships over the course of 18 months, strengthening the ability of government officials and civil society leaders, and working together to advance government transparency and accountability. Fellows will join forces with an extensive network that boasts more than 45 years of person-to-person engagement across cultures and regions.

Participating countries include Brazil, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and the United States. Jeannie will be placed at Alianza ONG, an organization dedicated to promoting nonprofit organizations and their contributions and role in a civil society, in the capital city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for three weeks in July and August, 2012.

“Nonprofits (and NGO's) in different countries have a common need for positive relationships between community organizations and legislative bodies, which makes for better decisions and a lively democracy. Minnesota nonprofits have gained a great deal from international exchanges and in this case the legislative focus makes it unique," said Jon Pratt, MCN’s executive director.

Partners of the Americas, a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit, coordinates the placement of Legislative Fellows with host organizations in participating countries, and promotes knowledge and understanding of the diversity of the Western Hemisphere. Exchanges and fellowship programs help increase awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences and foster intellectual growth.
