Primary Duties:

The Program Assistant is responsible for observing and interacting with students on a mentor level, providing opportunities for students to interact, demonstrate healthy living behaviors, learn, have fun, etc.

Essential Functions

·         Work collaboratively with other staff students, assisting in providing a safe, productive and fun learning environment for participants

·         Demonstrate independent decision-making, planning and follow through

·         Maintain effective and professional communication with individuals inside and outside of MICC

·         Facilitate positive relationships with community partners and promote MICC whenever possible

·         Maintain confidentiality and promote respect for all MICC students, graduates, staff, families and others

·         Record student information and evaluate student performance as required

·         Other duties as assigned

Areas of Responsibility

Specific duties include:

·         Supervision of students on weekend and evening recreation and leisure activities to ensure a positive experience for all participants

·         Encouraging students to attend and participate in events, using a variety of methods

·         Finding ways to engage students who generally do not attend events and activities

·         Assisting students in resolution of issues and concerns

·         Documenting information regarding events occurring during evening and weekend programming in the student/member information system

·         Providing transportation and support for regularly scheduled trips to grocery store, YMCA, etc

·         Acting as first-responder to emergency situations, using a calm and decisive manner

·         Participate in leading clubs, learning labs, and continuing education programming 


Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in a discipline relevant to the above duties (i.e. Special Education, Youth Work, Sociology, Psychology, Therapeutic or Outdoor Recreation, Art Therapy etc.), be working toward one of the above degrees or possess equivalent experience. Experience in working with young adults with learning disabilities is highly desirable

·         Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility and good judgment

·         Maintain confidentiality of organizational, employee and student information

·         Demonstrate professionalism in work performance and communication with others

·         Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with strong oral and written communication skills

·         Current driver's license with a good driving record and ability to drive 15-passenger van

·         Able to pass a criminal background check
