Organization Summary:

Ronald McDonald House Charities-Upper Midwest in partnership with our community, provides a comfortable and caring home-away-from-home that supports keeping families together and reduces stress during a child’s serious illness. RMHC-UM operates four locations across in the Twin Cities, serving over 5000 families a year, providing 71 overnight rooms, meals and activities for families with kids facing a medical crisis.

Primary Duties:

Relief Managers play a vital role in continuing our mission of providing a welcoming and comforting environment for families who are in midst of a healthcare crisis. Relief managers are needed to provide program services and to manage program operations during the weekends, holidays, and week day evening shifts. Relief manager are critical to RMHC providing caring and compassionate services 365 days a year.

We are looking for Relief managers to join our team at all 4 of locations in the Twin Cities.  
There are two programs in Minneapolis and two in St Paul. Responsibilities include guest management, cleaning, and volunteer supervision.

Relief managers must be available and able to commit to working 2-3 shifts a month. 2 holiday shifts a year and be able to respond to on call requests for coverage. Overnight shifts are available.

Primary Responsibilities                                                                                           

Guest Management and programming assistance

  • Provide management of the program and guests accessing program services 
  • Provide emotional support to families.
  • Using established the guidelines and working with hospital social workers- manage the day to day operations of the program, that includes taking a referral, determine eligibility, register new families, touring families, and responding to inquiries about program services, donating, and/or volunteering 
  • By applying established protocols, manage the dynamics of the House and deal with family behavioral issues in a compassionate and consistent manner. 
  • Work closely with volunteers and staff to ensure efficient cleaning and turnover of guestrooms and cleaning of other areas so that programs are welcoming and appropriately maintained for the families and guests. .

 Manage and support volunteers

  • Meet and greet volunteers who are assigned to work in the program during the shift. Provide orientation and daily task management to volunteer.
  • Greet, tour, and orient Cooks for Kids Meal groups to the Program and organization.
  • Register and sign in groups. Provide an exceptional customer experience so that all volunteers want to continue involvement with the organization and program

Complete log entries, perform routine tasks and responsibilities

  • Fulfill routine weekend responsibilities (stocking supplies, database entries, etc) Complete log entries to insure that communication about the events of house are accurately reflected to insure a seamless transition during staffing changes.





  • Associate degree required, Bachelor degree preferred
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse ages and backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Experience delivering top box customer service in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization
  • Compassion and the ability to work with families facing a health crisis or loss of a child

  • Ability to take initiative and persevere through multiple demands and requests
  • Ability to work in a fluid environment with unexpected variations throughout the workday
  • Ability to manage details, organize, prioritize

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a phone, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Frequently communicates and exchanges information with families, volunteers, staff, and the general public both written and verbally
  • Works well under stress


Physical Demands

  • Frequently load and unload carts, stock shelves in the laundry and pantry, strip beds and remove laundry, and take out trash weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Perform cleaning tasks such as moving a vacuum, sweeping, mopping and cleaning the kitchen
  • Occasionally move about to provide tours to families

Expected Hours of Work

This is a part time occasional position averaging less than 20 hours per week. This is a non-benefit eligible position. Shifts are primarily weekend days and evenings, holidays and weekday evenings. Overnights are available for some sites. A private room is provided for showering and sleeping if staying overnight. Employees are compensated for overnight sleep time. Relief managers must commit to working an average of 2-3 weekend shifts in a month and be available to work 2 holidays over the course of a year.

Work Environment

Ronald McDonald House Charities Upper Midwest operates programs within 3 local pediatric hospitals in Minneapolis and St. Paul.   Programs provide services to families who have children receiving treatment in the hospital.
