Primary Duties:

The Director of Policy & Advocacy will have primary responsibility for forming, recommending and advancing MHP’s public policy positions. The Director will act as MHP’s primary representative at the state capitol and primary contact on public policy for MHP’s organizational partners. This position supervises the advocacy staff and interns as appropriate and participates as a member of the MHP Leadership Team.

RESPONSIBLITIES

• Represent MHP at the state capitol and with state advocacy coalitions.

• Develop recommendations on MHP public policy agenda.

• Develop and maintain relationships with MHP’s policy partners (local governments, housing developers, low income and housing advocates).

• Work with the Executive Director in advancing federal and Twin Cities metropolitan housing policy.

• Oversee outreach to engage advocates in policy activities.

• Report on legislative progress, write blogs and speak to organizations that wish to be informed of housing policy and legislative proposals.

• Supervise department staff.

Experience:



• Knowledge of tax policy and process for state appropriations, aptitude for understanding and explaining state budgets.

• Public speaking experience and excellent writing and communication skills.

• Knowledge of public policy issues facing rural and metro Minnesota, especially housing.

• Diplomacy, Professionalism.

• Flexibility in adapting to short deadlines and a fast paced environment, and ability to manage several simultaneous projects.

• Highly motivated, professional presence and commitment to MHP mission and values.

Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree, Law or Masters Degree preferred

Preferred Experience: 5 - 7 Years

Preferred Field of Expertise: Public Policy experience in a nonprofit or coalition environment

• Lobbying experience, optimally in a coalition context.

• Knowledge of Minnesota and federal legislative processes.

• Political campaign experience.

• Supervisory Experience.

• Experience in nonprofit operations/management, and/or community development.

• Experience in using social media.

 

Additional Info:

This position requires occasional travel with overnight stays. Availability to work evenings and weekends at certain times of the year (during session). Remote work, at the state Capitol and other offsite locations will be required.
