Dean of Students

PALADIN CAREER AND TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

Organization Summary:

At Paladin Career & Technical High School, a small public charter school in Blaine, MN serving grades 9-12, it is our belief that building strong relationships is at the core of each student’s educational success.  Our mission is to help students realize their own potential and to provide an environment in which they thrive.  We serve around 200 high school aged students, a majority of whom identify as Black or African American, and almost 80% of whom qualify for free/reduced priced lunch. Our students come from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.  Paladin is immensely fortunate for its diversity, which enriches the educational process where individualized programming supports the needs and interests of each student, thereby maximizing the potential for success.  With this in mind, students are engaged in their education through a combination of project-based learning, experiential learning, work-based learning and seminars (short, focused classes).

Primary Duties:

As a school, we are intentional about meeting students where they are academically, emotionally, and socially. We understand that there can be unseen barriers to success in school, and we believe in the importance of connecting and building relationships as a means of better understanding and addressing those barriers.  We also recognize and attempt to be responsive to our students' adverse childhood experiences, thereby providing a sense of safety and connection which is vital to academic success. Through these efforts, we are on a journey to become a trauma-sensitive school that continues to push innovation through the utilization of restorative practices.

Realistically, we need someone who is on a journey of unlearning the status quo of today’s education landscape. Our ideal Dean of Students is firmly rooted in the principles of restorative practices and who recognizes that education is a right rather than a privilege. Given that research has shown how brain development continues until the age of 25, we feel that a zero-tolerance approach to young adults has no place in schools and that suspensions are rarely the answer. We also strive to challenge the trend of suspension and expulsion as a means of pushing students out of the educational setting, a method that disproportionately impacts students of color, particularly  in Minnesota. Lastly, Paladin’s Dean of Students must be comfortable with conflict, able to see incidents as learning experiences rather than violations of rules requiring punitive action. If this approach matches your passions and interests, here's what your time at Paladin will be all about:

  • Creating and facilitating restorative approaches with Paladin’s staff and students to build community and accountability

  • Building positive and supportive relationships with students and their parents/guardians

  • Coordinating the restorative process when incidents of harm have occurred

  • Coordinating school-wide initiatives and events to build the Paladin community

  • Maintaining and reporting accurate records and documentation of incidents and restorative processes

  • Conducting timely communication of the above listed processes with appropriate students, staff, parents/guardians, and others
