Primary Duties:

 The Associate Director of Internal Communications is an effective writer and communicator who is passionate about the employee experience. This person is a member of the integrated Marketing and Communications division that leads communication planning and execution to serve both Luther Seminary and Augsburg University. The Associate Director works collaboratively as part of the integrated communications team to develop, create, and implement communications aligned with organizational mission and objectives, ensuring information is communicated strategically and effectively.  The Associate Director also has a keen understanding and appreciation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, its relevancy in the 21st century, and the manners in which the ELCA shapes and informs the two organizations.

You will:

  • Develop and execute internal communications strategy

    • Work with executive leadership, including both institutions’ presidents, and campus partners at Luther Seminary and Augsburg to develop plans to effectively communicate internal strategic objectives and initiatives.

    • Serve as primary communications staff for a range of institutional internal announcements, identifying core messages, developing content, coordinating the review process, and overseeing timely distribution.    

    • Support employee communications from the institutions’ presidents and boards, including regular written updates and scheduled all-campus meetings.

    • Write and edit impactful, engaging content utilizing exemplary writing skills and storytelling.

    • Create engaging, innovative messaging for multiple media channels (e.g., social media and video) to deliver content and engage audiences.

    • Craft and execute communications for leaders and partners through a variety of media including, for example, webcasts, videos, speeches, meetings, presentations, emails and the intranet.

    • Ensure the timely deployment of digital internal communications and articles across all operational areas.

    • Advise teams and leaders on effective communication tactics to support institutional initiatives.

    • Ensure the overall communications strategy is delivered and that results are tracked and analyzed to determine how well desired outcomes are achieved.

  • Manage external communication initiatives

    • Serve as primary point of contact for Luther Seminary external communications needs, including communication planning and message development on topics relevant to external constituents and crafting responses to inquiries from those groups.

    • Work with institutional leaders and partners from both organizations to develop communication plans and core messaging to effectively communicate with targeted external constituent groups.

    • Craft and distribute news items (information, stories, calendar items) for applicable external (and internal) media channels.

    • As assigned, support leadership or external partners in support of leadership in developing or refining communications and materials for external, high-profile events, speaking engagements, and meetings.

    • Work with partners across the Marketing and Communication division to ensure that internal and external communication strategy, messaging, and timing are in alignment and consistently support the organization’s strategic plan.

  • Facilitate communication of internal teams within the organizations:

    • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal partners.

    • Work with campus partners to provide communications guidance and training to improve internal communication effectiveness across the institutions.

    • Support employee engagement by acting as an internal brand ambassador.

    • Proactively solicit feedback from campus leadership and partners, monitor real-time feedback, analyze data, and make recommendations to continuously improve communications effectiveness.

    • Participate in the design and strategy for intranet-based communications, including providing functionality requirements, content strategy, content creation and maintenance, coordination of content management roles, and editorial oversight of written and visual content.

    • Utilize analytics tools and evaluation methodologies to measure efficacy and performance of the intranet and other digital communications.


Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Human Resources or related field.

  • 5+ years internal communication experience working with executive leadership and designing and implementing comprehensive, multi-channel communication programs.

  • Team player, strategic, growth-oriented, and a communications subject matter expert.

  • Creativity and ability to persuade and build commitment to vision, mission, and goals of the organization.

  • Action-oriented and results-driven; able to gather information from multiple sources, including competitors, to propel the organization forward.

  • Advanced editorial copywriting and editing skills.

  • Able to multitask, managing projects from inception through delivery with little oversight.

  • Proven track record of identifying communication-improvement opportunities and acting to improve processes.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or other mainline Christian organizations is highly desirable.

  • Experience managing an intranet is highly desirable.
