Substitute Cook (therapeutic preschool)

Organization Summary:

Southside Family Nurturing Center is a holistic social service agency with over 40 years of experience serving families in the Phillips community and surrounding neighborhoods of South Minneapolis who are experiencing multiple risk factors. These risk factors include: moderate to severe poverty, family violence, chemical dependency, immigration, homelessness, and mental health. We offer half-day therapeutic preschool and home visiting services to provide support, parent education, and resource referral. Therapeutic interventions are offered to children including speech, occupational, play, and music therapy. All programming, including meals and transportation, is free of charge and families participate in our services voluntarily. Our mission is: "Together with families and community, we nurture children, build on family strengths, and find alternatives to violence."  

Southside Family Nurturing Center is seeking to recruit a substitute cook who will work on call/as needed, Monday – Thursday mornings, 8 am – 1:30 pm. This person will be responsible for preparing and serving breakfast and lunch for our therapeutic preschool programming.

Job Type: Part Time Salary: $15/hour
Hours: 8 am - 1:30 pm M-Th 

Primary Duties:


  • Breakfast and lunch preparation and service for 26 children and 10 staff
  • Daily kitchen cleaning and maintenance
  • Ensuring and maintaining food at safe and appropriate temperatures
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the preschool tables and setting for lunch
  • Serving toddler- and preschool-appropriate portions according to CACFP meal guidelines
  • Maintaining accurate records for our files, including food production logs



  • At least 18 years of age
  • Familiarity with Minnesota Department of Health food service guidelines
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, or kneel. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
