Budget cuts hurt us all, threatening values and disrupting communities. Strong investments move us all forward. This year is a budget year at the Minnesota State Capitol so now is the time to understand how the state budget works.

In the session, you’ll learn about what the state’s latest economic forecast means for state tax and budget decisions, how state funding is raised and spent, and how you can be part of setting the state’s budget priorities. Participants will gain an understanding of the state’s current budget situation, key budget decision points, and practice how to read budget documents.

Whether you have little knowledge of the budget process or need a refresher, this training is perfect for those who want to understand the state budget. With a solid understanding of how the budget works, you can become a stronger advocate!

Principles & Practices

In an effort to support nonprofits in fulfilling their missions, this event will help to focus your work on the following practices:

  • POLICY 1: Nonprofits should help their clients, members, volunteers and donors learn how relevant policies affect them, develop their skills and knowledge in public policy making, and help them take advantage of opportunities to participate in the public policy process.
  • POLICY 5: Nonprofits should maintain a sound understanding of the current public policy environment in their activity area and how that impacts the communities they serve.
