Are you a nonprofit chief executive that wants to develop a stronger relationship with your board? Or are you a nonprofit board member that wants to be more effective at your board role? If so, this interactive BoardSource workshop is for you.

This workshop will help you gain greater clarity and understanding about nonprofit board roles and responsibilities, how to achieve an effective partnership between the board and the nonprofit chief executive, where the board should focus its time and energy, and ways to strengthen your board. This BoardSource-approved curriculum is delivered only by BoardSource certified governance trainers, a select group of expert trainers that complete a rigorous application and certification process.

As a result of attending this session, participants will:

  • Build a shared understanding and working knowledge of the roles, responsibilities and expectations of nonprofit boards
  • Understand how to build a stronger partnership between the chief executive and the board
  • Identify specific needs and action steps for increased effectiveness

Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence

The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits is committed to offering training sessions that support the Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence. This workshop helps us achieve the following:

  • GOV 13: Board members are responsible for fully understanding their legal and fiduciary responsibilities and carrying out their duties in the following areas: strategic planning, policy approval and ongoing review, annual review of the executive director’s performance and compensation, succession planning, setting of compensation structure.
  • LEAD 1: Nonprofit leaders should make clear the decision making structures and processes of the organization and its governing body.
  • LEAD 14: Nonprofit leaders should foster a culture of information sharing and interaction between the board and others in the organization so that innovation and creativity can come from diverse parts of the organization.

About the Presenter

Sherry HoltzSherry Holtz has served as a foundation board chair, nonprofit board member, consultant to foundation and nonprofit boards, interim executive director, volunteer leader securing sponsorships and managing volunteers, and multi-disciplined human resources leader in a Fortune 500 nonprofit, membership organization. She is a BoardSource certified governance trainer, part of a select group that is proficient in board governance topics, advanced facilitation techniques, and the BoardSource training methodology. Sherry holds a bachelor of arts in business administration and computer science from Concordia College, and a master of arts in human resources from the University of Minnesota. She is founder and principal consultant of Mission Momentum LLC which specializes in board assessment and composition, chief executive performance and pay, board governance and effectiveness, chief executive and board member orientation and onboarding, and strategy development and implementation.
