Media can amplify advocacy messages to the public or influence key decision makers. Media advocacy is a critical component of advancing issue advocacy. However, working with media can often feel high stakes or intimidating.

Join this training and get ready to feel confident in your interactions with members of the media whether you are pitching a story, throwing a press conference or answering a call from a journalist.

Participants will learn from and engage with reporters who will share how to make a strong pitch and tips on building relationships with them. This is a perfect opportunity to get some insights to strengthen your media work!

Confirmed Reporters:

  • Ibrahim Hirsi is a staff writer for MinnPost who covers workforce and immigration issues.
  • Alexandra Renslo serves as the assistant news director and anchor for CCX News.
  • Lindsey Seavert works at KARE 11 where she tells stories of inspiration, especially stories about people overcoming odds.
  • Shannon Prather covers philanthropy and the nonprofit community for the Star Tribune.

Principles & Practices

In an effort to support nonprofits in fulfilling their missions, this event will help to focus your work on the following practices:

  • POLICY 1: Nonprofits should help their clients, members, volunteers and donors learn how relevant policies affect them, develop their skills and knowledge in public policy making, and help them take advantage of opportunities to participate in the public policy process.
  • POLICY 8: In situations where an organization’s mission is directly affected by a public policy, nonprofits should lead advocacy efforts regarding the policy, which may involve a variety of advocacy activities including direct lobbying.
