This advanced workshop will cover the critical techniques and tactics that grant writers require to create well-developed grant proposals as part of an effective communication strategy with funders.

In this training, participants learn to:

  • Develop the necessary writing style to both inform and persuade your reader to support your project
  • Develop a work plan and explore how grant writing fits within the process of contacting and cultivating potential funders
  • Understand the funding landscape, both geographical and sub-sector
  • Develop logic models as a critical tool for both designing and communicating a detailed project proposal
  • Craft a budget that conveys an accurate picture of your project’s needs and value
  • Have an opportunity to review actual grant proposals

Participants will be asked to reply to a short questionnaire and to submit an electronic copy of your organization’s grant proposal two weeks before the workshop to use during peer-review of real, in-progress grant proposals. Details will be sent to those who are registered.

Registration for this workshop is limited to professionals currently working in the nonprofit sector whose job responsibility includes grantwriting.

To register, it is required that you have been writing grants for at least six months or have taken MCN’s introductory grantwriting class. If you are newer to grantwriting, please register for MCN’s Grantwriting Clinic for Beginners. By registering for this session, participants agree to keep confidential other organizations’ information shared during workshops.

Post-workshop: Participants can submit updated proposals to the presenter with peer review incorporated; Kari will provide additional feedback and 20 minute phone calls with each attendee for additional feedback and conversation.

Principles & Practices

In an effort to support nonprofits in fulfilling their missions, this workshop will help to focus your work on the following practices:

  • FUND 11: Organizational communications, including fundraising appeals, must include clear, accurate and honest information about the organization, its activities, and when, where and for whom the funds will be used in addition to the tax treatment of a contribution.
  • FUND 15: A nonprofit should plan its communications to tell the story of the organization and maintain consistent, mission-focused and timely communication with donors.
  • EVAL 4: An organization’s measurement systems should be practical and useful to improve ongoing processes, activities and results.

EVAL 14: Nonprofits should share evaluation results with a broad range of constituents to demonstrate the organization’s impact, the community’s ongoing need and the lessons learned.
