Your Board of Directors is a vital key to a well-managed nonprofit. This workshop is a "must attend" session for nonprofits seeking to develop a high-performing and effective board.

This workshop will focus on a deep dive into action planning and trouble-shooting around the areas of:

  • board/staff roles clarification,
  • supporting the chief executive officer,
  • effective communication,
  • creation of board committees,
  • creating or revising board member and committee job descriptions,
  • creating or revising board policies and procedures,
  • board self- assessment process, and
  • setting board member expectations.

Executive directors, board chairs, board members, other volunteers and staff are all encouraged to attend the workshops in this two-part series. Attend with a team to get the biggest benefit for your organization.

Note: This is the second workshop in a two-part series and will add depth to the content learned at Building an Effective Nonprofit Board of Directors in February or June 2017.  If you did not attend the earlier workshop, you are welcome to attend in September; however, some of the fundamentals covered in the first of the series will not be covered again.

Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence

In an effort to support nonprofits in fulfilling their missions, this workshop will help to focus your work on the following practices:

  • GOV 13: Board members are responsible for fully understanding their legal and fiduciary responsibilities and carrying out their duties in the following areas: strategic planning, policy approval and ongoing review, annual review of the executive director’s performance and compensation, succession planning, setting of compensation structure.
  • TRANSPARENCY 2: A nonprofit has an obligation to responsibly use its resources toward its mission and to benefit the community. The organization’s board should approve its financial audits; the executive director and the principal financial manager should attest to the audit’s findings.
  • LEAD 1: Nonprofit leaders should make clear the decision making structures and processes of the organization and its governing body.
  • LEAD 14: Nonprofit leaders should foster a culture of information sharing and interaction between the board and others in the organization so that innovation and creativity can come from diverse parts of the organization.
