When we talk of leadership transitions and development, we often think of our executive staff members. Often overlooked and/or only deeply discussed but not acted on is the leadership development of board members. We frequently assume a) all board members are leaders or b) they can learn to be leaders as they serve or c) their leadership is not that critical. This interactive workshop is created to address these assumptions and to discuss approaches and processes in developing your boards’ leadership and transitions from leader to leader.
This workshop is part of the 2012 Nonprofit Governance Series, a four-part series for nonprofit board and staff.
About the Series

About the Presenter
Julia Classen is president and co-founder of Aurora Consulting, a company specializing in providing consulting, planning and facilitation services to nonprofit organizations. She has been a leader on nonprofit boards of directors for more than 30 years. Julia served as the chair of the board of directors of the MN Charities Review Council. She currently serves as vice chair of the board of directors of the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota and an officer of the board of the New World Foundation located in New York City. In 2011 she served as MCN's senior fellow for the Performance Management Leadership Institute.
Julia has worked as a consultant in a variety of arenas, including board development, leadership development, research and assessment, facilitation, public policy formation and strategic management and planning. In addition to her consulting, Julia is an adjunct faculty member at the University of MN, Hubert H. Humphrey School for Public Affairs, teaching management and governance of nonprofits as a core course of the undergraduate major/minor in nonprofit management. She has taught at Hamline University’s School of Business teaching courses in organizational theory and behavior and governance and strategic planning for nonprofits.
Julia authored Here We Go Again: The Cyclical Behavior of Nonprofit Boards in the Spring, 2011 issue of the Nonprofit Quarterly. She has also co-authored Multi-Generational Governance: Is There Such a Thing with Dr. Melissa Stone. Julia received her B.A. from Ripon College in political science and speech-communications and her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, with a focus on leadership and nonprofit management.
