Join Sallie Gaines, director of communications, and Terrence Meersman, vice president of programs at Margaret A. Cargill Foundation to learn about the history and evolution of Minnesota’s newest and largest philanthropy, Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies serves as the umbrella over three grantmaking organizations founded by Margaret A. Cargill, each with the common vision to provide meaningful assistance and support to society, the arts, the environment and all living things. The three organizations are Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, Anne Ray Charitable Trust and Akaloa Resource Foundation. The vast majority of the $6 billion philanthropy will be directed to organizations and causes outside of Minnesota, although some programs (such as the environment) will include Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Sallie L. Gaines serves as director of communications at the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. Previously she was a senior vice president of Hill & Knowlton, a global public relations agency. There she led the media practice in the agency’s Chicago office, and worked with a wide array of clients on reputation management and visibility programs, as well as crisis communications. She also has more than 20 years of experience as a reporter/editor at the Chicago Tribune, covering mostly business and civic issues. Sallie has a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri and an M.B.A. from Loyola University Chicago. She has been a visiting professor at both universities, as well as Northwestern University, teaching journalism and communications classes.

Before starting at Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, Terrence Meersman was the vice chair and executive director at Talaris Institute, supporting parents and caregivers in raising socially and emotionally healthy children. Terrence has worked with Virginia G. Piper Trust as executive vice president, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as director of finance and administration/senior program officer, The Pew Charitable Trusts as Venture Fund program officer, and Save the Children as executive vice president/COO. Terrence has a M.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Santa Clara University.

A light continental breakfast will be served.
