Increasing gifts from individual donors may seem like an impossibility when the economy is struggling. Especially since asking for financial contributions can be the one task that staff and board members really don’t like to do. Even the thought of asking someone for a contribution can cause sweaty palms and anxiety. While both fear and time management can be barriers to asking as often as we should, what if there could be a way to shift fear into action? What if there could be a way that asking seemed easy?

The Art of Asking will address your fears and provide practical, road-tested strategies that can be put into use immediately to increase gifts while more deeply engaging your board in this effort. This session is highly interactive with a combination of lecture, group conversation, and paired asking practice for both “yes” and “no” responses. Please come prepared to fully participate to get the full experience!

By attending this workshop, you will:

  • Identify fears about talking about money;
  • Learn a framework to share your organization’s funding needs so people will want to take action;
  • Learn how asking questions and listening carefully make asking easier;
  • Acquire ease with asking and actually WANT to invite others for support; and
  • Generate more yes answers when asking for support.

About the Presenter

Lori JacobwithLori L. Jacobwith brings nearly 25 years of professional speaking, coaching, and training to her work with social profit organizations. In addition to working as a development director, executive director, and president/CEO for various organizations, Lori has provided training for thousands of organizations and their boards nationwide. Her strategies and tools have helped organizations to collectively raise nearly $150 million from individuals. In 2006 Lori established herself as an independent speaker, trainer, and fundraising coach with the mission of creating environments for people to find ease and joy in fundraising.

Lori has a B.A. in political science and speech-communication from the University of Minnesota and additional training through the Fund Raising School at Indiana University. She lives in Minnesota, is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, a partner with Social Ventures Partners – Minnesota, and an active volunteer with organizations supporting women and children.
