Embracing Our Nonprofit-ness: Capitalizing on the Sector’s Strengths

Nonprofit Finance & Sustainability Conference Keynote Session
February 25, 2014
Earle Brown Heritage Center, Brooklyn Center, MN

Running a nonprofit is uniquely challenging. Yet an increasing number of those inside and outside the nonprofit sector are advocating that philanthropy become more “like business” – adopting frameworks and mindsets seen to be more dominant in the corporate world. Keynote speaker Phil Buchanan, president of the Center for Effective Philanthropy, will offer a counter to this perspective, discussing the unique role of the nonprofit sector and the challenge of sustaining effective organizations. He will offer advice for leaders on how to lead in a way that maximizes the chances of achieving positive outcomes for the issues, communities, people and fields nonprofits seek to influence.

The video includes 2 segments: the 33-minute presentation and the 33-minute questions & answers with the audience.

New Frontiers in Data Privacy

Nonprofit Technology & Communications Conference Keynote Session
April 10, 2014
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, Minneapolis, MN

Major developments in technology will soon present tough new challenges to every organization that manages personal data. Recent news stories show the importance of “privacy by design.” Trends like cloud computing, the internet of things, location awareness and big data will further complicate privacy and security issues. How will they affect the way nonprofit organizations communicate, keep records or learn about stakeholders? How might the law respond? This forward-looking keynote provides food for thought to leaders who must prepare for the next wave of disruptive innovation. Professor William (Bill) McGeveran, associate professor and Vance Opperman research scholar, University of Minnesota Law School, specializes in information law, including intellectual property, data privacy, communications and technology, and free speech. His primary current research focuses on legal and other rules governing digital identity and data privacy, ranging from online impersonation to celebrities’ rights over their images to the privacy features of Facebook and other social networks.

The video includes 2 segments: the 47-minute presentation and the 9-minute questions & answers with the audience.
